Whigs and Cities: Popular Politics in the Age of Walpole and Pitt

Whigs and Cities: Popular Politics in the Age of Walpole and Pitt
$680.73

This is the first major study of urban politics in the early Hanoverian era. Rogers challenges the view that the political nation was of minimal significance, and highlights the critical contribution of larger towns to the agitations that beset Walpole and swept Pitt to power. He shows, through a study of Bristol, Norwich, and London, the relative strength of opposition sentiment, the persistence of local antagonisms, and the interplay of economic interest and political clientage. Offering a challenging reinterpretation of the role of the crowd in urban politics, Whigs and Cities sheds new light on the dynamics of urban political culture in the 18th century.

Soundtracks: Popular Music, Identity and Place

Soundtracks: Popular Music, Identity and Place
$260.00

This title traces the relationships between music, space and identity, from inner city scenes to the music of nations, to give a wide-ranging perspective on popular music. It examines the influence of cultures, economics, politics, and technology on the changing structure and geographies of music at local and global levels. Sound Tracks also combines an analysis of changing personal identities – social, ethnic and sexual – with an extended discussion of globalization and local resistance. It takes music from its role as an expression of local culture in indigenous societies, to its gradual evolution towards an incomplete emergence of a global music industry. It also gives particular attention to the complex spread of world music from reggae to zouk and beyond, from their own diverse roots. Migration and ethnic diversity have contributed to hybrid, diasporic sounds, as evident in Algerian rai or in locally distinctive rap sounds. The technology of production and distribution, as music has become a commodity, are set against the apparent specificity of particular scenes, such as those of the Mersey, Dunedin or Seattle sounds.

The Economics of Railroad Safety

The Economics of Railroad Safety
$259.07

The American public has a fascination with railroad wrecks that goes back a long way. One hundred years ago, staged railroad accidents were popular events. At the Iowa State fair in 1896, 89,000 people paid $20 each, at current prices, to see two trains, throttles wide open, collide with each other. "Head-on Joe" Connolly made a business out of "cornfield meets" holding seventy-three events in thirty-six years. Picture books of train wrecks do good business presumably because a train wreck can guarantee a spectacular destruction of property without the messy loss of life associated with aircraft accidents. A "train wreck" has also entered the popular vocabulary in a most unusual way. When political manoeuvering leads to failure to pass the federal budget, and a shutdown is likely of government services, this is widely called a "train wreck. " In business and team sports, bumbling and lack of coordination leading to a spectacular and public failure to perform is also called "causing a train wreck. " A person or organization who is disorganized may be labelled a "train wreck. " It is therefore not surprising that the public perception of the safety of railroads centers on images of twisted metal and burning tank cars, and a general feeling that these events occur quite often. After a series of railroad accidents, such as occurred in the winter of 1996 or the summer of 1997, there are inevitable calls that government "should do something.

Popular Culture In Indonesia: Fluid Identities in Post-authoritarian Politics
$245.43

This book examines popular culture in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, and the third largest democracy. It provides a full account of the key trends since the collapse of the authoritarian Suharto regime (1998), a time of great change in Indonesian society more generally. It explains how one of the most significant results of the deepening industrialization in Southeast Asia since the 1980s has been the expansion of consumption and new forms of media, and that Indonesia is a prime example of this development. It goes on to show that although the Asian economic crisis in 1997 had immediate and negative impacts on incumbent governments, as well as the socioeconomic life for most people in the region, at the same time popular cultures have been dramatically reinvigorated as never before. It includes analysis of important themes, including political activism and citizenship, gender, class, age and ethnicity. Throughout, it shows how the multilayered and contradictory processes of identity formation in Indonesia are inextricably linked to popular culture. This is one of the first books on Indonesia’s media and popular culture in English. It is a significant addition to the literature on Asian popular culture, and will be of interest to anyone who is interested in new developments in media and popular culture in Indonesia and Asia.
